Soccer Dog: The Movie [VHS]

If you can accept the premise of a soccer-crazy town deep in this country’s heartland–complete with a game-fixing Mafioso dad, then you can buy this story of a talented dog who brings a boy and his adoptive father together and helps the team win the championship. Kids in the 6-10 range will enjoy the comeuppances received by a kid bully, maniacal dog catcher, drill sergeant coach, and buffoon coach, even as adults may wince at the stereotypes. –Kimberly Heinrichs

Reservoir Dogs (15th Anniversary) [Blu-ray]

Amazon.com essential video

Quentin Tarantino came out of nowhere (i.e., a video store in Manhattan Beach, California) and turned Hollywood on its ear in 1992 with his explosive first feature, Reservoir Dogs. Like Tarantino’s mainstream breakthrough Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs has an unconventional structure, cleverly shuffling back and forth in time to reveal details about the characters, experienced criminals who know next to nothing about each other. Joe (Lawrence Tierney) has assembled them to pull off a simple heist, and has gruffly assigned them color-coded aliases (Mr. Orange, … read more

Hollywood’s Top Dogs: The Dog Hero in Film (Paperback)

Hollywood's Top Dogs: The Dog Hero in Film

Review

Deborah Painter s insistent focus on her carefully circumscribed and defined viewpoint on the movie dog hero will hold the reader s attention. The result is an attractive narrative account of over 100 years of canine hero movies. This is no mean achievement, given the extent of the original, scattered resources. Simply dropping a few names of your friends and mine helps to suggest her coverage: Strongheart, Jean (a very early star), Rin-Tin-Tin, Peter the Great, Asta, Flash, Lad a Dog, Lassie (a dog), and Benji. The mere listing … read more
